Download Site Frequently Asked Questions

Student Account Login Problems

If you are unable to login using your SEASnet username and password when prompted from the download site you can contact the appropriate email address listed on the download site or help@seas.ucla.edu after confirming that you have checked all the possible issues listed below:

  1. you must be registered in at least one credit engineering course (the download site is not available during the interquarter and summer unless you are enrolled in an engineering class during Summer Sessions)
  2. your registration fees have been paid
  3. you are trying to login using a valid SEASnet username and password
  4. you just changed your password - access to the download site is only updated twice daily, once in the morning and again in the early afternoon - if you have changed your password after this time you will need to wait until the following day for access
  5. MCCA software is not available to students

Staff Account Login Problems

Staff are not eligible to download MSDNAA software. If you have read the MSDNAA Program Usage Guidelines and feel that you are qualified to obtain MSDNAA software please email msdnaa-admin@seas.ucla.edu and explain that you have read and understand the guidelines, that the work you will be performing meets those requirements; making sure to include the name of the faculty member in charge of the research, along with a list of the software you are interested in. Login problems with the MCCA site are generally caused by account password synchronization issues mentioned under item 4. above.

Faculty Account Login Problems

Only HSSEAS tenure track faculty have access to MSDNAA Program software. All others must note proceedures mentioned under Staff Account Login Problems above. Faculty login problems are also generally related to password synchronization issues mentioned in item 4.

Software Download Problems

If you are able to login to the download site but are unable to download software you've selected, SEASnet has determined that the majority of the problems are a result of one of the two issues listed here.

Problems Unzipping Downloaded Files

We have zipped the files using a zip program that is compatible with PKZIP 2.04. You need to make sure to use a zip program that is compatible with the version used by SEASnet.

What are ISO image files and how do I use them?

Many products are posted as ISO-9660 image files. An ISO-9660 image file is an exact representation of a CD or DVD, including the content and the logical format. The most common use of an image file is to write it to a blank CD-R or DVD-R, resulting in an identical copy of the original disc including file name and volume label information. ISO image files may also be opened and their contents copied to a local folder, much like ZIP files. ISO files may also be virtually mounted and accessed as a device. These three methods of using ISO images are described below. Note: you may have to rename the file extension from .IMG or .UDF to .ISO, depending on your software.

How do I write an .ISO file to a CD-R or a DVD-R

Most CD-R/DVD-R writing software includes a feature to create a disc from an image file. Note: you must use the special "copy image to CD" or "burn image" functionality. The contents of image files may be accessed directly using third-party tools. Using this method you can extract the files from an image file to a temporary folder on your hard drive, then run setup. The following tools offer such image file support:

The products listed above have been known to work. Other products that can manipulate ISO files may work, but have not been tested.

License Keys

If your software requires a license key it will be automatically emailed to your SEASnet account or your URSA account if you are an undergraduate. Keys will only be emailed to your SEASnet account or official URSA account if you are an undergraduate. If you need multiple licenses of the same software please email msdnaa-admin@seas.ucla.edu from your SEASnet account or your URSA account if you are an undergraduate explaining the circumstances and including a statement saying you have read and understand the MSDNAA Program requirements and that your request meets those requirements.

If you have installed MSDNAA software on a machine you are replacing you need to transfer the license to your new machine. To transfer the license you need to remove the software from your old machine, reinstall on the new system and click on the activation wizard. You will then need to phone the number listed in the activation wizard and explain to a Microsoft representative what steps you have taken and they will re-enable your key so that you can activate it for your new system. These steps may also be necessary if you have to reinstall an MSDNAA licensed OS (depending on what system changes were made).
